Have you ever felt as though your voice disappeared beneath everyone else’s noise? In Mark 10:46–52, Bartimaeus sits beside the road while a crowd passes by. When he calls to Jesus, people tell him to be quiet. He cries out again, and then the whole scene changes: Jesus stands still.
This calm New Day Focus devotional is for anyone who feels unseen, unheard, or left behind while life moves around them. We will reflect on Bartimaeus calling Jesus the Son of David, the crowd’s attempt to silence him, Christ’s tender question, and the faith that leads Bartimaeus from the roadside into a life of following Jesus.
“Jesus stood still and said, ‘Call him.’”

The Gospel Reading
Mark 10:46–52. World English Bible, public domain.
46 They came to Jericho. As he went out from Jericho with his disciples and a great multitude, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, was sitting by the road.
47 When he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, you son of David, have mercy on me!”
48 Many rebuked him, that he should be quiet, but he cried out much more, “You son of David, have mercy on me!”
49 Jesus stood still and said, “Call him.” They called the blind man, saying to him, “Cheer up! Get up. He is calling you!”
50 He, casting away his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.
51 Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said to him, “Rabboni, that I may see again.”
52 Jesus said to him, “Go your way. Your faith has made you well.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the way.
Devotional Reflection
Bartimaeus sits beside the road while a great crowd moves past him. He cannot see Jesus, but he has heard enough to call him the Son of David. Faith begins with what he has received, and it becomes a cry for mercy that refuses to disappear beneath the noise around him.
Many people rebuke him and tell him to be quiet. The crowd moving with Jesus does not automatically reflect the heart of Jesus. Bartimaeus cries out even more, and then Mark gives us a beautiful sentence: Jesus stood still. The need that others treated as an interruption receives the full attention of Christ.
Jesus asks, “What do you want me to do for you?” He does not reduce Bartimaeus to a condition or assume that his voice is unnecessary. He restores dignity by inviting the man to name his desire. Honest prayer can begin the same way, without hiding behind religious language or pretending that our deepest need does not matter.
Bartimaeus receives his sight and follows Jesus on the way. Grace brings him from the roadside into discipleship. Christ not only notices those who feel invisible. He calls them near, listens to them, restores them, and gives them a place on the road with him.
Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us. Hear the prayers that feel buried beneath the noise and meet those who feel unseen. Give us courage to name our true need, and shape us into a community that makes room for every person you call. Amen.
