He Knows Your Name: Mary Magdalene Meets the Risen Jesus

29 minutes 28 seconds
The risen Jesus in a peaceful garden near the empty tomb

Mary stands outside the empty tomb believing that everything has been taken from her. Then the risen Jesus speaks her name, and grief gives way to recognition.

This reflection lingers with one of the most tender resurrection encounters in the Gospels. It reminds us that Jesus meets people personally and that his voice can reach us even when sorrow has blurred our sight.

“Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him, “Rabboni!””

John 20:16, World English Bible

The Gospel Reading

John 20:11–18. World English Bible, public domain.

11 But Mary was standing outside at the tomb weeping. So as she wept, she stooped and looked into the tomb,

12 and she saw two angels in white sitting, one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.

13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “Because they have taken away my Lord, and I don’t know where they have laid him.”

14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, and didn’t know that it was Jesus.

15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Who are you looking for?” She, supposing him to be the gardener, said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him, “Rabboni!” which is to say, “Teacher!”

17 Jesus said to her, “Don’t hold me, for I haven’t yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”

18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had said these things to her.

Devotional Reflection

Mary remains when others have left. Her tears are an expression of love, but grief has shaped what she believes is possible. She can see angels and even Jesus himself without recognizing what stands before her.

Jesus asks why she is weeping and whom she is seeking. He does not shame her confusion. He meets her inside it. Recognition comes when he speaks her name, turning a general encounter into a personal summons.

The risen Christ knows more than Mary’s name. He knows the history, loyalty, sorrow, and hope carried within it. His voice restores her sense of relationship and then gives her a message to carry to the other disciples.

When we feel anonymous inside grief, this scene reminds us that resurrection hope is personal. Jesus does not merely announce life in the abstract. He comes near, calls people by name, and gives them a future beyond the moment they thought had ended everything.

Lord Jesus, meet us where sorrow has made you difficult to recognize. Speak with the personal tenderness that reaches beneath our fear, and help us hear our lives within your saving love. Give us courage to carry hope to others. Amen.
